Left-Handed Turns Cause Many Motorcycle Accidents

Many truck and car drivers fail to notice motorcyclists when driving on public roads. This leads to numerous motorcycle crashes, one of the most common resulting from left-turn accidents. While drivers’ failure to see motorcycles is often a major cause of accidents, some of these crashes occur because the driver miscalculated how far away the rider had been.

Left-hand turn accidents account for about 42 percent of all crashes that involve a car and a motorcycle. Most of these left-hand turn accidents result in serious injuries or death. Although in most cases the court will find the driver to be 100 percent at fault, there are instances when the fault is found to be shared between the driver and the rider.

The responsibility of the driver

When making a left turn, drivers should indicate their intention to turn left a reasonable distance before making the turn. If the driver is traveling at higher speeds, they should signal at an even greater distance from the turn. It is the responsibility of the driver to check that there is no traffic before making a left turn at an intersection. Drivers should also be sure that they do not pose any danger to other road users.

What motorcyclists should do to protect themselves

While motorcyclists are more vulnerable to being injured in collisions with cars, there are some steps riders can take to protect themselves from being involved in a left-turn accident. If you are a motorcyclist:

•Avoid speeding, since high speeds increase the chance of the crashes taking place.

•Avoid riding when under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances, as they impair your judgment.

•When approaching an intersection, avoid staying in the left-hand lane.

• Assume that you are invisible to all cars.

• Avoid riding while distracted, angry or tired to maintain your concentration and sense of judgment.

If you’ve been in an accident

The injuries riders sustain in collisions with cars can be significant. If you or a loved one has been involved in a motorcycle accident, you need committed representation from an experienced personal injury lawyer to help secure the compensation you need for recovery.
