Preventing pedestrian accidents in New Jersey

When you walk out of the office to grab lunch, you probably do not consider the possibility of a traffic accident, but maybe you should. According to the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety, pedestrians made up over 30 percent of traffic fatalities in 2015. What precautions can you take to keep safe?

Pay close attention in cities.

Urban areas account for approximately 75 percent of pedestrian accidents. Cities have highly congested streets with drivers rushing to their destinations. Only cross the street at crosswalks, and only when you have a walk sign. Even if you have the right of way, pause and make eye contact with drivers before you step into the street. A distracted commuter can easily miss a stop sign and enter the intersection when you least expect it.

Be careful drinking alcohol.

43 percent of struck pedestrian had a BAC of 0.08 or higher. Alcohol clouds your judgment, dulls your senses and increases the chance you will engage in risky behavior. Either plan to drink in moderation, or have a taxi drive you home after imbibing.

Be wary of poor visibility.

Over 25 percent of pedestrian deaths occur between 6 pm and 9 pm. It is more difficult for cars to see pedestrians at dawn, in the evening and at night. Weather can also disrupt driver visibility with periods of fog, rain or snow placing pedestrians at a higher risk. If you are out during these periods, be especially on guard against vehicles.

If you are hurt in an accident, seek help.

No matter how minor an accident may seem, file a police report and be examined by a doctor immediately following an accident. Write down the name and insurance information of the vehicle owner, and document any changes in your physical health. If you are injured, consider contacting an attorney who can evaluate your circumstances and fight for you.
