Fall victim may claim workers' compensation benefits

One of the biggest threats faced by construction workers in New Jersey is fall accidents. Many of the jobs done in this industry involve working at heights, and falls are reported to be the cause of a significant percentage of workers' compensation claims filed by construction workers. The prevalence of these accidents indicates the low level of compliance by employers with federal and state safety regulations.

Workers should not be allowed to work at heights without the appropriate fall protection that is securely anchored to arrest any falls that may occur. The presence of such protection will be questioned by investigators of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration when they look into a recent fall accident at a construction site in Union. Reportedly, an emergency call was made at about 9 a.m on a recent Wednesday, reporting a fall from the roof of a home.

Emergency crews and firefighters responded and arrived at the site to find a 50-year-old construction worker with serious injuries. They noted that he had fallen from a roof that was between 15 and 20 feet high. He was conscious when paramedics stabilized him and during his transportation to the hospital for treatment of injuries to his face, chest and leg.

Falls from any heights can result in serious injuries -- often causing fractures that can prevent victims from going back to work for extended periods. Along with medical expenses, lost income can cause severe economic hardships for victims and their dependents. Fortunately, the New Jersey workers' compensation insurance system is there to provide financial relief. Benefits to cover these losses can be claimed, and attorneys who are experienced in this field of the law are available to provide support and guidance throughout the claims process.
