911 calls detail crash resulting in fatal personal injury

Emergency calls made by witnesses to a crash may be the difference in a few injuries or fatalities and many. In New Jersey, witnesses to a crash involving a school bus gave first responders details about the wreck that helped them to respond quickly and effectively. The crash did result in the personal injury of several individuals as well as two fatalities.

The accident occurred around 10:20 a.m. on May 17 when a large truck and a school bus collided. Soon after the accident, witnesses began calling 911. The first caller told the police operator that the bus was struck by a dump truck and gave the operator the location of the accident, including the nearest mile marker. Not long after the first call was placed, another individual called stating that he was a paramedic for the New York City Fire Department. He told the operator that the accident occurred between a semi-truck and a school bus and that there were several injured children who were able to exit the bus and others who were trapped inside.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they discovered that many of the children had suffered minor injuries and were able to move around on their own, but some were not so lucky. One ten-year-old student and a social studies teacher died as a result of the injuries that they suffered during the accident. The driver of the bus, who was revealed to have had his license suspended 14 times, was arrested after the accident and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.

To receive a call saying that their child has been involved in an accident while on a school trip or while riding the bus to or from school is a nightmare for many parents. New Jersey residents who have suffered a personal injury due to an accident may wish to consult with an attorney. The injured victims, or their parents in the case of minors, may be entitled to compensation for medical costs, funeral costs or other damages.
