Texting drivers can lead to personal injury

Being hit by a distracted driver can be incredibly frustrating. After all, these types of accidents and any resulting personal injury issues are largely preventable. However, distracted driving wrecks in New Jersey could be poised to decrease sometime in the future as teens seem to be texting behind the wheel at lower rates than older drivers.

Multiple research agencies -- including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- teamed up to study the rate of texting and driving among teens. The results from their Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that almost 40 percent of teenagers aged at least 14 years or older reported that they texted behind the wheel at least one time in the month before the survey. This high percentage is understandably alarming, but experts say that it is actually lower than the average estimate for adult drivers.

The rate of teenage texting and driving also varies from state to state. States with lower ages for obtaining learner's permits have higher rates than those who require teens to be slightly older before learning to drive. New Jersey has a statewide ban on all handheld phone use while driving, but experts did not expand on its effect on the rate of teen texting.

Safety experts caution that texting and driving is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. This is not new information, as most drivers fully understand that it is not safe to focus on tasks other than driving while behind the wheel. Victims who were hurt in an accident caused by a distracted driver can usually demonstrate the other party's negligence during a personal injury claim, which if successful can yield necessary financial compensation for their injuries.
